What can you do?
Volunteering roles are varied. What you choose may depend on how much time you can spare. For example:
A few hours each month:
- assist membership recruitment
- help with mailings
- help with design/marketing/ website
- support financial literacy and education
- work in schools to teach money management.
- staff the branch's collection points
- help to establish branch networks
- be a volunteer teller or cashier
A day or more every month
What about becoming an elected director of your local credit union?
The board of directors has a vital role in/ providing leadership and direction to a credit union and is the governing body that makes the policy decisions. Credit unions need people with a diverse range of skills and knowledge to help them develop.
Credit union directors are elected by the membership. They are not paid but expenses are covered.
Other elected positions include:
- Supervisory committee -the internal audit committee which ensures the credit union follows rules and regulations and is run properly.
- Credit committee -the committee that oversees loan applications.

I'm not sure why I should become a volunteer
Volunteers are a key part of the credit union. By getting involved in your credit union you: give something back to your community utilise your skills and attributes access training and development meet others in your community.
Do I have anything to offer?
Everyone has something to offer the credit union. You don't need to be a financial expert or a wizard on the Pc. Talking to your credit union will reveal your potential contribution.
I'm not sure I can give a commitment
Some commitment would be expected from you -you and your credit union will decide how much. Don't commit to time you cannot spare. Start with a couple of hours and see how it goes.
I don't know anything about credit unions
Don't worry -you can learn. The credit union will take you through an induction process. You'll be surprised how quickly you pick things up!
