Lewisham Employees’ Credit Union (Crownsavers) has been providing this staff benefit for 10 years it was founded in July 1997 with the full support and a small grant from Lewisham Council to enable the Credit Union to offer an additional benefit to it’s employees, at the start the Credit Union was open just to those employees working for the Council. The Credit Union officially extended its common bond a few years later to include Lewisham University Hospital and Lewisham College.
Crownsavers is owned by its members and its officers are elected from the membership to manage the asset of the Credit Union on a voluntary basis (no volunteer is paid for holding a position in the Credit Union).
Crownsavers now has £1M in assets and is rapidly approaching 1,500 memebers.
Crownsavers in partnership with Lewisham Energy Efficiency department administers the Energy Loan Scheme (a Government initiative) to encourage employees to purchase and install energy efficiency appliances. This scheme provides interest free loans and advice for the installation of domestic energy efficiency measures and renewable energy. To access this initiative you have to be a member of Crownsavers.
Each Credit Union has a “common bond” which determines who can join it. The common bond may be for people living and working in the same area, people working for the same employer or people who belong to the same association, such as a church or trade union. Crownsavers common bond is those people working within the above mentioned organisations in Lewisham, or organisations which has subcontracted or taken over services from Lewisham Council, such as Housing, parking and Security.
